Singhasari: A Font That Elevates Brand Identity

It was a quiet Tuesday morning when I sat down with my laptop, staring at the same old logo for my handmade candle business. The design had served me well for years, but something felt off. My customers had started asking if I could update my packaging, and I knew it was time to make a change.

I had heard about Singhasari, an old Javanese alphabet from the 9th century. It wasn’t just any font—it had a rich history and a unique character that made it stand out. As I downloaded it, I couldn’t help but feel excited. This might be the piece I needed to give my brand a fresh, authentic look.

A Font With Character

Singhasari has a distinct personality. It’s not your typical modern sans serif or elegant serif. Instead, it carries a sense of tradition, artistry, and cultural depth. The curves are soft yet deliberate, and the strokes have a handcrafted feel. It reminded me of ancient manuscripts and traditional Indonesian calligraphy—something timeless and meaningful.

What stood out most was how it balanced between being decorative and readable. It wasn’t too ornate that it became hard to read, nor too plain that it lost its charm. It was perfect for adding a touch of authenticity without overwhelming the design.

Putting Singhasari Into Practice

I started by redesigning my product labels. My candles were sold in minimalist glass jars, and the previous label looked almost out of place. I used Singhasari for the brand name and paired it with a clean sans serif font for the rest of the text. The contrast worked beautifully—the traditional script gave the label a warm, artisanal feel, while the sans serif kept it modern and easy to read.

Next, I updated my social media visuals. I created a new Instagram post featuring my latest candle collection. I used Singhasari for the headline and as a decorative accent on the image overlays. The font added a subtle elegance that matched the natural ingredients I used in my products. My followers commented that they loved the “new vibe” and said it felt more cohesive with my brand story.

I even tried using it on my website banners. I chose a lighter weight of the font for headings and a bolder version for call-to-action buttons. The result was professional yet inviting, which helped increase engagement on my site.

More Than Just a Font

Typography isn’t just about choosing a pretty font. It plays a huge role in how people perceive your brand. Singhasari helped me create a more consistent visual identity across all my materials. Whether it was on my packaging, website, or social media, everything now felt like it belonged together.

The font also helped improve readability. Even though it was a script-style typeface, it was still legible on small labels and mobile screens. That was important because I wanted my customers to be able to read the information easily, no matter where they saw it.

I found that Singhasari worked best for headlines, logos, and decorative accents. It wasn’t ideal for long paragraphs of text, but it was perfect for titles, taglines, and short phrases. When used correctly, it elevated the overall design without making it feel cluttered.

Font Pairing Tips

To keep things balanced, I paired Singhasari with a clean sans serif font for body text. This combination gave my designs a nice contrast—traditional meets modern. It also worked well with a simple serif font for a more refined look. If I wanted to add some extra flair, I would use a handwritten font alongside it for a more personal touch.

I also made sure to check the font’s file formats and included styles. It came in several weights, which was helpful for different applications. Since I was using it for commercial purposes, I verified that it had proper licensing so I could use it on my product packaging and digital assets without any issues.

One thing I learned is that even free fonts can be powerful tools when used right. Singhasari was a great example of a Freebies font that didn’t compromise on quality. It had enough versatility to fit into various design projects while still maintaining its unique character.

Whether you’re running a bakery, a beauty brand, or a café, the right font can transform your brand visuals. Singhasari gave me the confidence to refresh my look and connect with my audience in a more meaningful way. And that, I think, is the real value of good typography.
