Two for Juan: A Medieval Font for Modern Campaigns

I was designing a promotional graphic for an upcoming fantasy-themed online course launch when I needed a font that would instantly transport the audience into a world of swords, legends, and ancient lore. That’s when I stumbled upon Two for Juan, an antique, 3D-looking display font by Nick Curtis. It wasn’t just a font—it felt like a story waiting to be told.

Two for Juan has a distinct visual style that leans into medieval and fantasy themes. The letterforms are bold, with a slight raised texture that gives them a three-dimensional effect. This makes the font ideal for creating a sense of depth and historical authenticity in design projects. It carries a mood that's both adventurous and mysterious, which is perfect for campaigns aiming to evoke a sense of discovery or nostalgia.

As I began applying it to my campaign visuals, I noticed how well it performed across different formats. For the YouTube thumbnail, I used it as the main headline text. The 3D look stood out even on smaller screens, making it easy for viewers to spot the video in a fast-scrolling feed. On Instagram, I paired it with a clean sans serif font for body copy, which helped maintain readability without losing the whimsical tone of the campaign.

The font also worked exceptionally well for Pinterest pins. Since the platform thrives on visual storytelling, Two for Juan added a layer of intrigue to the pinned images. Whether it was a quote graphic about mythical creatures or a teaser for the course, the font helped establish a clear visual hierarchy. The message remained clear, and the brand identity felt cohesive throughout the content series.

One thing I learned early on was that Two for Juan excels best with short headlines, callouts, and decorative titles. It’s not the kind of font you’d want to use for long paragraphs of text or dense information. When I tried using it for email banners, it worked great for the subject line but didn’t translate well for the body text. That’s when I realized its true strength lies in display text rather than supporting typography.

For digital ads, I found that Two for Juan made a strong first impression. Its unique character helped the ad stand out from the competition. However, I had to be careful with color contrast and background choices. On dark backgrounds, the font looked more dramatic, while on light ones, it maintained a classic feel. It’s important to test different variations to ensure readability, especially on mobile screens where small previews can make or break engagement.

Font pairing is another area where Two for Juan shines. I paired it with a modern sans serif font like Montserrat for body text, which balanced the ornate style of the display font with clean, legible copy. This combination allowed the campaign to feel both creative and professional, appealing to a wide range of audiences.

Before using any font in a client project or branded content, I always check what styles, alternates, ligatures, and weights are included. In the case of Two for Juan, the file formats were accessible, and the multilingual support covered most common languages. As a freebie, it’s a great resource for designers who need a premium font feel without the premium price tag.

While Two for Juan is fantastic for themed campaigns, it may not be suitable for formal corporate communication or situations requiring a lot of dense text. It’s more of a storytelling tool, best used sparingly to highlight key messages or create a memorable brand moment.

Overall, Two for Juan proved to be a valuable asset in this campaign. It brought a unique visual flair that aligned perfectly with the theme and helped elevate the overall design quality. If you're working on a project that needs a touch of old-world charm or a hint of adventure, this font is definitely worth considering.
